Have you ever wanted to take a class about the social aspects of fraternities and sororities? Well, if you attend UCLA, you will be able to this spring.
The course, entitled “Desire on Campus: UCLA Sororities and Fraternities Move It Forward” will cover topics such as the unwritten social rules we all abide by and the balance of power during a hookup. And while that seems pretty cool, this isn’t any old class. You won’t be writing papers or taking tests. Instead, the coursework will be completed through “action conversation, which is a method of expression that includes deep discussion as well as dance and theater performances,” according to the course’s co-instructor Victoria Marks, a professor of choreography.
Okay, so maybe that sounds a little weird. Actually, it seems really freaking strange. But the purpose of the course is in the right place, at least. Marks told The Daily Bruin, “Oftentimes, the finger gets pointed at sorority and fraternity students because of the deeply social nature of Greek life. We’re not really hearing a lot from the students themselves. What about having Greek students be thought (of as) leaders instead of being discriminated against?”
Now that’s something we can get behind..
