The 5 Benefits Of Having A Wildcard Friend

There’s something special about your group of friends. Whatever brought you together (dorm living, pledge sisters, mutual hatred for an individual) has given you to opportunity to grow as a family. They are the first ones you send screenshots to, the first ones you check with when making plans, and the first ones to be at your apartment at any moment’s notice. But who is the second?

Your wildcard friend.

The two of you are not in the same group. Maybe you like different frats. Maybe you actually hate each others’ friends. But the bond between you two is stronger than the lack of proximity or mutual breeding grounds. Having a wildcard friend is one of the best type of friends to have.

1.You Will Never Get Sick Of Each Other

You two hang out with each other because you want to, not because you have to. It may take a little bit of extra effort, but it is always worth it. You greet your best friend with an hourly “sup” and your wildcard friend with a big “I haven’t seen you in five whole days” squeeze. The fact that you don’t spend every waking moment together has given you two the chance to have your own experiences, and then come together and share them with each other.

2. She Takes You Out Of Your Comfort Zone

She takes you to a different frat house than you usually go to and forces you to make friends with new people, and you get to parade her around your favorite frat’s parties while thwarting off the weirdos and setting her up with your hottest friends. If you are in a funk with your usual crowd, she will be able to bring you into a whole new world. She might even be able to set you up with her cute friend with the man bun. Regardless of what you do together, it’s always something fun and different.

3. You Get An Outside Opinion

As women, we must come to a group consensus before making any decision, from what we want from Chipotle to what we want from Chad, our current love interest. Your best friends will give you advice that will be positive, even if the situation is negative. Your wildcard friend is not afraid to stir the pot a bit and be brutally honest. Sometimes you are afraid to ask her about Chad, because you know she hates him, but you need to hear how much he sucks and how much you deserve better.

4. You Have Someone To Bitch About Your Best Friends With

As much as we love our best friends, they can get on our nerves sometimes. You don’t want any shit talk to get back to them because you greatly value the friendship you share, so you go to a safe place where you know it won’t be spread. Your wildcard friend has no loyalties to your best friend, and therefore will not be compelled to tell her what you said.

5. She Appreciates Little Things About You

Not that your best friends do not, but they are used to them. Your best friends are totally over you quoting Bridesmaids on a consistent basis, but your wildcard friend thinks that you smell like pine needles and have a face like sunshine. Not only is she not sick of you, she encourages your quirks. She highlights your talents, supports your decisions, and celebrates your success. And isn’t that what every good friend is supposed to do?
