As much as I love Friends, I think it’s safe to say that some of its final couple pairings didn’t quite make sense. While Monica and Chandler are great together, I can’t quite shake the feeling that I wanted her to end up with Richard. Rachel getting off the plane for Ross made me bawl like a baby, but would she really settle for him IRL? Even those couples I can accept, but the one I still have a hard time with is the one that never happened — Phoebe and Joey.
In a recent interview with People, Matt LeBlanc said that he and Lisa Kudrow thought the exact same thing and pushed for a Phoebe/Joey casual relationship to have occurred throughout the entire series. Whaaaaaaat.
Towards the end we actually pitched the idea that Joey and Phoebe had been having casual sex the entire time. We’d go back and shoot all the historical scenes and just before a moment that everyone recognizes, there’s Joey and Phoebe coming out of a broom closet together. But they were like, ‘Nah.’
Personally, I would have loved an outrageous reveal scene (a la Monica popping out of Chandler’s bed in London) to show Phoebe and Joey hooking up for nine years, but the directors unfortunately didn’t quite see it that way. Of all of the Friends couples though, Phoebe and Mike just make the most sense, so in a way, I’m glad the directors said no to this idea. Still though, a Friends where Phoebe and Joey had always hooked up makes total sense, and I’ll still always be wondering exactly why those two never made the leap to be more than just “Friends.”
