Life Lessons From Your Sorority Family

Sorority Lineage

While you tell PNMs you love all your sisters equally, there are obviously a few frenemies you could do without. Luckily, your lineage more than makes up for it. Mine even has its own drinking game. While blood might be thicker than water, our ties are forged by vodka–the strongest bond of all. My family has enough members to create an epic sorority stack, and these girls have taught me everything about life, love not-boyfriends, and the importance of sisterly bonding.

Having Babies Is Hard

I can barely handle having sorority babies, and people I know have real ones (including my big). It’s hard molding the young minds of America, but at least I have help from my significant other, vodka. Taking a little made you realize that your parents are lying–there’s always a favorite. Babies are like pancakes: some come out wrong. Even if you have a bad egg in your otherwise perfect lineage, it’s the connections you make with each other that count. Even when you get nervous that your little loves your grandlittle more than you, you know it’s a different kind of bond. You still have the hot glue gun scar (Harry Potter style) to prove your love, and she crafted the perfect paddle for you. A new nugget can’t break that kind of link you and your big or little have.

You Can’t Stop Someone From Making Your Mistakes

The downfall of shaping sorority members to your likeness? No, it’s not hubris. It’s that they are destined to make the exact same mistakes you made in the past. They will be attracted to the same sleazy guys, they will be politely asked to leave formals, and the president will repeatedly ask them to stop dancing on the same elevated surfaces. Remember that time your not-boyfriend forced you to go on a revenge spiral that rivaled “The Count of Monte Cristo?” While it made you feel better, you knew it wasn’t a high point in your life. If someone–like your big, who did–told you to stop going rogue, you would have thought she was trying to kill your vibe. Understanding is better than judging, even if you have to watch your little go crazy for a semester. As long as you wait for her with ice cream, alcohol, and glitter, everything will be fine. Don’t be a regular big–be a cool big.

There Will Always Be Someone There For You

Even if your big constantly rolls her eyes or your little looks at you in fear because binge drinking, they are your family. They will always answer your quadruple texts, pregame with you when you’re a “sober” sister, and to buy you cupcakes when a gentleman caller goes drops you for no reason. They will be in your wedding, even if it’s 100 years away (despite what someone would think from your pins). You will meet the next generations of your family and it will make you feel old, but it will be worth it. You will always know that no matter how far removed you are from your chapter–whether by years or distance–someone will keep your legacy alive.

Even after you graduate, your family will be your go-to girls for everything. Sure, you may have to sugarcoat things and tell a few white lies every once in a while, but they just get you. In college, they became your family. Like every family, there are nagging members who get inappropriately drunk at dinner and the pressure to be the best version of yourself. That’s what family is, and you’re lucky to have found yours. The best thing is, you’ll have it for the rest of your life, long after graduation.
