When I was in college, my roommate Kate and I had an obsession with the Duggars, the proud Christian family brought to you by TLC via the hit reality show “19 Kids and Counting,” then “17 Kids and Counting.” We were fascinated by their strange customs, their outdated views on love and sex (and condoms), and the half-sweet, half-creepy leader of the pack, Jim Bob Duggar. We were amazed that they came up with so many J-names for their children to honor old Jim Bob, and sometimes we wondered if wife Michelle got jealous. We laughed maniacally as we fantasized about what a run-in between the Duggars and the ladies of apartment 311 would look like, and we cackled when they wore wetsuits to the beach, because anything else was “not modest.” “Were we modest,” we wondered, “or would we immediately disintegrate upon entering a place as pure as the Duggar home?”
Mostly, though, we loved Jessa Duggar. We spent every episode picking apart the evidence that she’d someday rebel against the Duggar ways: a casual eye roll here and there, the flawless makeup, the big barrel curls that resembled the wild curls of her sisters, but you just knew she’d succumbed to vanity and put some heat and Frizz-Ease through those tresses. Much to our dismay, she seemed to grow up, find a man, and decide not to kiss him until marriage, like the rest of the weirdos in her family. “It’s a waste of hotness!” we thought. But we were wrong. We were very wrong.
Rebel, Jessa did, on her wedding day. She and now husband Ben elected to share their “first kiss,” in private, and I was assuming it was because videos like this exist. However, now we’re learning that, as it happens to so many of us, their first kiss quite possibly quickly turned into a first fuck–but unlike the rest of us, Jessa Duggar engaged in “an act of lust” IN THE CHURCH on her wedding day. And what’s worse? People walked in on her doing it.
From “Mary B.”, a guest at the wedding:
I was very upset when I was told about the incident that was witnessed by [my daughters] when the door to the room [Jessa and Ben] were in was accidently opened. I am not sure why they would not wait for the evening to pray and then consumate God’s marriage.
The Lord has blessed them and brought them together. To hear so many people discussing what they inadvertendly walked into was heartbreaking and troubling. Why did this happen? How could this beautiful, joyus day now be forever tainted and destroyed by rumors about what the girls may (or may not have) seen? And if this is true why would they commit such an act in the Lord’s home…the same Lord who guided them together. This really made me question Ben’s headship and leadership skills. I pray he is not swayed to evil. I pray he acts as strong husband and worship leader to Miss Jessa. I have a terrible, guy feeling. I have tried talking to my husband about this but he has said he will not talk about it until he prays about it and gets an answer from the Lord. This on average takes about 48 hours for him to recieve an answer.
And this is what happens when you wait until marriage, repressing a natural and healthy human instinct, people..
